Dancer and Choreographer Derek Hough is on the road for his first tour in 4 years, “Symphony of Dance.” The tour also features Hayley Hough, Derek’s wife, and an entire cast of talented dancers and musicians.
I recently attended the show at the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, NC, just one of several stops on the North American tour. This one was a sold-out show, and for good reason.
“Symphony of Dance” isn’t just a dance performance. It’s a full musical production with captivating dance routines of various styles, vocal performances, storytelling, and humor.
Hough doesn’t just show off his impeccable dance skills (to routines he choreographed), but he also sings and plays the drums and guitar.
After seeing this show, you’re left wondering, “Is there anything Derek Hough can’t do?”
Hough also transforms the show into an engaging experience for fans, running through the audience to high-five fans and choosing a few volunteers to bring on stage for a wild stunt. It’s an elaborate, high-energy experience for everyone.
Hayley Hough (née Hayley Erbert) is also a large part of this show, leading several of her own routines and proving to be a force all her own.
She and Derek Hough brought plenty of romance to the stage as well. They danced several beautiful routines together, including one that helped tell the story of their romance. Hough also spoke to this, opening up to fans and gushing over the woman he shared the stage with.
The most emotional moment, however, was when Hough dedicated one special routine to Len Goodman.
Goodman was the former head judge on Dancing with the Stars, and he was someone Hough worked with from a young age before either of them were on the popular reality show. Hough is now a judge on the series himself (after having won a record number of times as a pro).
Hough noted this was a dance he hoped Len would have approved of — a clean, simple Waltz. Maybe he wouldn’t get a 10, he said, but he’d take an 8.
While this routine was smaller in scale, just Derek Hough and Hayley Hough, it was one fans of Dancing with the Stars had already been treated to if they’d been keeping up with the series. Yet seeing this in person was even more emotional than seeing it on the screen.
Hough tied everything together with an inspiring message. “Symphony of Dance” being the theme and the title of the show, he encouraged everyone to consider themselves a dancer because life itself is a dance.
