5 Fantasy Novels to Read in September A Dark and Drowning Tide, Celestial Monsters, The Thirteenth Child

To help your ever-growing TBR list, we’ll be highlighting fantasy novels coming out each month that you should put on your radar.

Our picks will be a mix of the latest installment in a beloved series, the beginning of a brand new series, or a standalone novel that you’ll want to sink your teeth into.

September’s picks feature a curse, vampires, a couple of murder mysteries, and more.

In order of release date, here are 5 fantasy novels we’re looking forward to reading in September:

1. Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma – September 3

Immortal Dark

Kidan infiltrates Uxlay University and lives with the vampire she believes stole June, her sister, in an attempt to get answers. Soon, there’s another murder eerily similar to June’s, and Kidan learns that there’s something much bigger going on. Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma is the first book in a new trilogy and hits shelves on September 3.

Book Description: It began long before my time, but something has always hunted our family.

Orphaned heiress Kidan Adane grew up far from the arcane society she was born into, where human bloodlines gain power through vampire companionship. When her sister, June, disappears, Kidan is convinced a vampire stole her — the very vampire bound to their family, the cruel yet captivating Susenyos Sagad.

To find June, Kidan must infiltrate the elite Uxlay University — where students study to ensure peaceful coexistence between humans and vampires and inherit their family legacies. Kidan must survive living with Susenyos — even as he does everything he can to drive her away. It doesn’t matter that Susenyos’s wickedness speaks to Kidan’s own violent nature and tempts her to surrender to a life of darkness. She must find her sister and kill Susenyos at all costs.

When a murder mirroring June’s disappearance shakes Uxlay, Kidan sinks further into the ruthless underworld of vampires, risking her very soul. There she discovers a centuries-old threat — and June could be at the center of it. To save her sister, Kidan must bring Uxlay to its knees and either break free from the horrors of her own actions or embrace the dark entanglements of love—and the blood it requires.

2. Celestial Monsters by Aiden Thomas – September 3

Celestial Monsters

Teo’s decision has wreaked havoc on the world, causing it to plunge into constant night. Teo, Aurelio, and Niya must capture the semidioses and retrieve the Sol Stone to restore their world. The conclusion to the Sunbearer Duology, Celestial Monsters by Aiden Thomas, hits shelves on September 3.

Book Description: Teo never thought he could be a Hero. Now, he doesn’t have a choice.

The sun is gone, the Obsidian gods have been released from their prison, and now chaos and destruction are wreaking havoc on Reino del Sol. All because Teo refused to sacrifice a fellow semidiose during the Sunbearer Trials.

With the world plunged into perpetual night, Teo, Aurelio and Niya must journey to the dark wilderness of Los Restos, battling vicious monsters while dealing with guilt, trauma, and a (very distracting) burgeoning romance between Teo and Aurelio. Once more racing against the clock, the trio are determined to rescue the captured semidioses and retrieve the Sol Stone. With it, Sol and their protective light can return and order can be restored.

Now the future of the whole world is in their hands.

3. The Lies We Conjure by Sarah Henning – September 17

The Lies We Conjure

Ruby and Wren take what appears to be an easy job — pose as this woman’s grandchildren at a dinner — but they become trapped in a manor full of witches and at least one of those witches is a murderer. The Lies We Conjure by Sarah Henning hits shelves on September 17.

Book Description: Ruby and her sister, Wren, are normal, middle-class Colorado high school students working a summer job at the local Renaissance Fest to supplement their meager college savings.

So when an eccentric old lady asks them to impersonate her long-absent grandchildren at a fancy dinner party at the jaw-dropping rate of two grand –each — for a single night… Wren insists it’s a no-brainer. Make some cash, have some fun, do a good deed.

But less than an hour into the evening at the mysterious Hegemony Manor, Ruby is sure she must have lost her mind to have agreed to this.

The hostess is dead, the gates are locked, and a magical curse ensures no one can leave until they solve both her murder and the riddles she left behind — in just three days. Because everyone else at this party is a powerful witch. And if the witches realize Ruby and Wren are imposters? The sisters won’t make it out of Hegemony Manor alive.

4. A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft – September 17

A Dark and Drowning Tide

Lorelei and her academic rival, Sylvia, are forced to work together to uncover the truth behind their professor’s murder. A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft releases on September 17.

Book Description: Lorelei Kaskel, a folklorist with a quick temper and an even quicker wit, is on an expedition with six eccentric nobles in search of a fabled spring. The magical spring promises untold power, which the king wants to harness to secure his reign of the embattled country of Brunnestaad. Lorelei is determined to use this opportunity to prove herself and make her wildest, most impossible dream come to become a naturalist, able to travel freely to lands she’s only ever read about.

The expedition gets off to a harrowing start when its leader — Lorelei’s beloved mentor — is murdered in her quarters aboard their ship. The suspects are her five remaining expedition mates, each with their own motive. The only person Lorelei knows must be innocent is her longtime academic rival, the insufferably gallant and maddeningly beautiful Sylvia von Wolff. Now in charge of the expedition, Lorelei must find the spring before the murderer strikes again — and a coup begins in earnest.

But there are other dangers lurking in the forests that rearrange themselves at night, rivers with slumbering dragons waiting beneath the water, and shapeshifting beasts out for blood.

As Lorelei and Sylvia grudgingly work together to uncover the truth — and resist their growing feelings for one another — they discover that their professor had secrets of her own. Secrets that make Lorelei question whether justice is worth pursuing, or if this kingdom is worth saving at all.

5. The Thirteenth Child by Erin A. Craig – September 24

The Thirteenth Child

Hazel’s been blessed with the ability to know how to cure any ailment, but this gift is also a curse that tells her when someone is marked for death. She is soon tasked with saving someone she knows is marked for death — the king. The Thirteenth Child by Erin A. Craig releases on September 24.

Book Description: All gifts come with a price.

Hazel Trépas has always known she wasn’t like the rest of her siblings. A thirteenth child, promised away to one of the gods, she spends her childhood waiting for her godfather — Merrick, the Dreaded End — to arrive.

When he does, he lays out exactly how he’s planned Hazel’s future. She will become a great healer, known throughout the kingdom for her precision and skill. To aid her endeavors, Merrick blesses Hazel with a gift, the ability to instantly deduce the exact cure needed to treat the sick.
