In a shocking move (because few TV shows live to tell the tale these days), Paramount+ has confirmed it will move forward with a second season for its hit teen drama, School Spirits.
In a video, the streamer announced the news, stating, “You asked, and we heard you,” to a chorus of social media posts from fans praising the show. “Season 2 is official!”
The renewal comes as a shock, given streamers have not been particularly kind to original content, axing series before they find their footing and ignoring fan outreach.
But Paramount+ demonstrates it is willing to give projects time to find an audience.
“School Spirits has captivated audiences with its gripping storyline, engaging characters and the enigmatic world of high school life, and we are thrilled to bring a second season to this loyal fan base,” Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin, Executive Vice Presidents at Nickelodeon and Awesomeness live-action series and films, said.
The weekly-airing show flew under the radar during its first season.
But the mystery of who killed Maddie Nears captivated viewers, pulling in a cult following and gaining traction just in time for its jaw-dropping season finale.
According to Domenic DiMeglio, chief marketing officer at Paramount Streaming, the teen drama “developed such a passionate and engaged fan base over the course of its first season, marking one of our most popular new young adult series to date.”
School Spirits stars Peyton List (Cobra Kai) as Maddie, a teenager who wakes up in the afterlife with no memory of how she died. Desperate for answers and unable to leave her high school, she turns to other ghosts that have died on the property for answers.
The cast of teen ghosts includes Milo Manheim (Prom Pact) as Wally, Sarah Yarkin (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) as Rhonda, and Nick Pugliese (Dramarama) as Charley.
Josh Zuckerman stars as their counselor, and Kristian Ventura as Maddie’s best friend.
Maddie’s search for her killer unravels a mystery driven by compelling angst and twinges of humor. But nothing can prepare newcomers for Season 1’s shocking cliffhanger.
But fear not, as we will know soon enough what fate awaits Maddie and her undead crew. Production on Season 2 of School Spirits is set to start in 2024.
