In order of release date, here are 6 rom-com novels to read this September:
1. Fall for Him by Andie Burke — September 3
Everyone knows the best meet-cutes start with your arch-nemesis neighbor falling through the roof and onto your bed. That’s the reality of Dylan and Derek’s agreement to live together until they can fix the giant hole in the ceiling and go their separate ways.
Forced to jam a year’s worth of grudges, two single men and a dog into a tiny one-bedroom apartment proves the perfect storm for this enemies-to-lovers story.
Book Description: Dylan Gallagher’s hot neighbor loathed him from the second he moved in, and causing a flood, falling through the floor, and landing directly onto that same neighbor’s bed probably means that’s unlikely to change. The poorly timed “It’s Raining Men” joke didn’t help.
Meanwhile, ER nurse Derek Chang’s life is a literal when-rains-it-pours nightmare. A man he hates dropped into his life along with an astronomically expensive problem originating from Derek’s own apartment’s plumbing. Also, the local HOA tyrant has been sniffing around trying to fine him for his extended, illicit banned breed dog-sitting.
Since Dylan also wants to keep the catastrophe quiet, he offers to fix the damage himself. Dylan’s sure he’s not Derek’s type, so he focuses all his ADHD hyper fixation energy on getting the repair job done as quickly as possible―avoiding doing anything stupid like acting on his very inconvenient crush. Meanwhile Derek tries to ignore that the tattooed nerd sleeping on the couch is surprisingly witty, smart, and kind, despite the long-term grudge Derek’s been holding against him. But will squeezing all their emotional baggage plus a dog into a tiny one-bedroom apartment be a major disaster…or just prove they’re made for each other?
2. My Vampire Plus-One by Jenna Levine — September 17
From the author of the charming and cheesy My Roommate Is a Vampire comes the second novel set in Jenna Levine’s entertaining world of paranormal rom-coms.
This sequel follows Reginald, the familiar of another ancient vampire, who strikes out on his own for a string of disastrous wedding invites. After all, Amelia is just a girl trying to get everyone off her back about her dating life, and a rude, arrogant, fashion-challenged creature of the undead makes for perfect wedding crasher material.
Book Description: Amelia Collins is tired of constant questions about her non-existent dating life, so she decides to get everyone off her back once and for all by inviting the worst person she can find to pose as her date to a family wedding: Reginald Cleaves.
Reginald is extremely handsome (which is not in his favour for Amelia’s purposes), but he’s also rude, infuriatingly arrogant, and wears a riot of clashing clothes that make him look like he got dressed in a skip — all factors in the plus column.
And the date goes well: everyone at the wedding, including Amelia, is horrified by Reginald and his actions, which include crashing the bar, starting up a breakdancing routine on the dance floor, and encouraging the kids to play frisbee with the fine china being used for dinner. (It really is a shame he’s so attractive).
After the evening is over, Reginald admits to Amelia that he’s a vampire, which doesn’t frighten her the way he expects it will. In fact, she asks if he would be willing to accompany her to a few more events over the course of the summer to help her further her goals of getting everyone to leave her alone. But there’s a fine line between love and hate, and the last thing either of them expects is there might be a growing spark between them…
3. Can’t Help Falling in Love by Sophie Sullivan — September 17
Is it really autumn if you don’t read a cozy romance book with a fall pun in the title?
Can’t Help Falling Love is here to ensure you don’t have to look far for that perfect autumn read, with a fake engagement, secret coperate royalty, and tons of fall fun throughout this trope-filled rom-com to fill that pumpkin spice latte-sized hole in your life.
Book Description: Lexi Danby is looking for some no-strings, fall fun. Once a college track star, she was forced to drop out when her father passed away. Now she’s trying to make ends meet while putting herself through school and caring for her grieving mother. When her comically bad waitressing lands her directly in the path of a handsome, charming stranger named Will, Lexi may just have found the distraction she’s been looking for. Their first date looks promising until a misunderstanding at a party thrusts Lexi and Will into a fake engagement they can’t talk themselves out of. And Will turns out to be a member of Seattle royalty.
Will Grand is heir to a major company, and Seattle’s most eligible bachelor. But he’s been placed in charge of an important merger with a company that values family above all else, and needs to show them that he’s settled down. While a fake engagement is advantageous from a business standpoint, it’s not so great for a budding relationship with a woman who’s wary of commitment. With a woman who Will is beginning to care about much more than he could have anticipated.
4. The Holiday Honeymoon Switch by Julia McKay — September 24
In true The Holiday fashion, this festive read sees two best friends switch places. Ivy goes on the Hawaiian honeymoon Holly never got to take with her fiancé, while Holly retreats to a cabin in the Hudson Valley to watch holiday movies in peace.
As the universe throws a few curveballs into their vacation plans, the women are pleasantly swept off their feet by hot bartenders and rugged Airbnb hosts who could make this Christmas one to remember.
Book Description: Holly Beech and Ivy Casey are bury-the-body besties. They’re so in sync, they even look alike. So when Holly’s fiancé jilts her, leaving her in shock and with a nonrefundable honeymoon, Holly convinces Ivy to switch places. Ivy will go on the Hawaiian honeymoon her best friend can’t bear to take alone, while Holly escapes to Ivy’s rented Hudson Valley cabin to binge-watch holiday movies and heal.
But Holly’s wallowing is interrupted when her rugged Airbnb host turns out to be her high school academic rival who’s had a major glow-up. Meanwhile, Ivy’s (now Hawaiian) annual solo art retreat is upended when Holly’s ex-fiancé checks into the honeymoon suite—with a new woman. Raging and bedless, the last thing Ivy expects is for the hot hotel bartender to come to her rescue. Against all odds, this Christmas might prove the most magical yet.
5. All I Want Is You by Falon Ballard — September 24
You thought we were done with celebrating Christmas in September? Not even close. All I Want Is You is everything you want from a cute, festive rom-com with rival exes forced to share a hotel room at the same inn during a snowstorm — with only one bed!
When the two authors realize their sexual tention can cure their writers block, they make a pact to do what’s best for their careers but it is Christmas and buried feelings are bound to come to the surface for these romance writers as they spend the holidays trying to tolerate each other’s company.
Book Description: All Jessica has ever wanted is her own happily ever after. Until that happens, she spends her days as a small-time romance writer, penning satisfying romances to continue to soothe the pain of her ex-boyfriend — also a “romance writer” and her worst nightmare — who has found success writing love stories without happy endings.
So when their writing obligations bring them to a remote inn a few days before Christmas, they’re a little more than peeved, especially when they get trapped sharing a room in a snowstorm…with only one bed. But what’s more fitting for the two romantic writers? When they realize the friction between them is the only cure for their writers’ block, they decide to turn their hate into fuel…and the pages start flying. But will her heart soar, too? Nick is the last guy on earth Jess could love… or is he really all she wants for Christmas?
6. The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year by Ally Carter — September 24
Ally Carter, queen of the teen series, also finds herself writing about two rival authors on Christmas this year — with a mysterious, potentially deadly twist!
Maggie and Ethan are invited to a holiday party at the English estate of a famous author. However, when said author disappears without a trace, these two unlikely partners will have to work together to figure out if this missing person case is a dangerous warning or a competition only one of them can win. As the stakes escalate, so do Maggie and Ethan’s feelings for each other.
Book Description: The bridge is out. The phones are down. And the most famous mystery writer in the world just disappeared out of a locked room three days before Christmas. Meet Maggie Chase and Ethan Wyatt: She’s the new Queen of the Cozy Mystery. He’s Mr. Big-time Thriller Guy. She hates his guts. He thinks her name is Marcie (no matter how many times she’s told him otherwise.)
But when they both accept a cryptic invitation to attend a Christmas house party at the English estate of a reclusive fan, neither is expecting their host to be the most powerful author in the world: Eleanor Ashley, the Duchess of Death herself. That night, the weather turns, and the next morning Eleanor is gone. She vanished from a locked room, and Maggie has to wonder: Is Eleanor in danger? Or is it all some kind of test? Is Ethan the competition? Or is he the only person in that snowbound mansion she can trust?
As the snow gets deeper and the stakes get higher, every clue will bring Maggie and Ethan closer to the truth — and each other.
