Many of the best movies begin as books. Atonement, No Country for Old Men, The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption, Brokeback Mountain, and Twilight are all films with origins in books or short stories. Movie adaptations of popular books are a classic combination. Every year, dozens upon dozens of books become movies or TV shows.
In the next few years, this trend will continue with some of your favorite authors having their books become movies that hopefully are respectable, if not faithful, adaptations. Let’s talk about some of the books becoming movies.
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
Booktok sensation Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross follows newspaper reporters who find themselves drawn to each other through their actions and words. Divine Rivals takes place in a world where gods are feuding and magic typewriters exist. However, the most magical thing of all is the power of love. Divine Rivals is the epic fantasy romance story of how, if it’s special enough, love will try to overcome all obstacles.
Paramount is adapting this beautiful love tale into a movie. It’s still in the early stages, so it could be years before the movie becomes a reality. This doesn’t seem like a project that will never become a reality because of its potential, especially visually. Divine Rivals may enter further into the development process as early as 2026.
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë’s masterpiece that’s been mostly labeled as a love story between Heathcliff and Catherine. However, it’s also a complex story of classism, obsession, and the descent into madness.
Because Emily Brontë’s novel is often reduced to simply a love story, this adaptation should be interesting in how it depicts Catherine and Heathcliff’s relationship.
Emerald Fennell tackles Wuthering Heights, with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi starring as the doomed main characters. It’s unclear how faithful this adaptation will be to the source material, or more of an inspired-by movie. Wuthering Heights is set for a February 2026 release. Anyone who likes gothic novels may enjoy this complicated, misrepresented novel.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Mary Shelley’s timeless novel tells the story of what happens when man tries to play God. It leads to destruction and death. Frankenstein is about Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who tries to create a man from body parts. The monster escapes and learns about the world.
Frankenstein is a classic that deserves its place in history as one of the best novels. It’s a fascinating look at humanity and the monsters we make. It has been adapted many times. However, in 2025, Netflix will release its adaptation directed by Guillermo del Toro. Oscar Issac and Jacob Elordi star as Victor Frankenstein and the monster.
Del Toro is a brilliant filmmaker who creates breathtaking visuals with heartwrenching storytelling. This will be a film not to miss in November 2025.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Taylor Jenkins Reid thrives at creating love stories that are part fictional biography and full tales of heartbreak, longing, and the complexity of falling in love when you can’t be with someone (at least not publicly). Journalist Monique Grant meets Hollywood legend Evelyn Hugo to get her life story.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a queer love story about Hugo’s seven husbands and one true love, Celia St. James. The movie adaptation has been in the works since 2019.
However, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo movie rights have been transferred and moved since an adaptation was announced. Since 2022, Netflix has had the rights to the novel with plans to eventually make it a movie. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo movie could stay in limbo for a while, but it’s a very popular novel that will likely become a movie within the next few years, at least we hope.
Verity by Colleen Hoover
Colleen Hoover’s novel follows lesser-known novelist Lowen as she’s tasked with acting as a ghostwriter for Verity Crawford. Verity is a very popular author with a dedicated following who wants to read more books. Verity is in a coma after a bad accident. Lowen moves into her home with her husband, Jeremy, and child. Lowen finds a manuscript that allows her to get to know Verity, and she may not be the woman everyone believes her to be.
Michael Showalter is directing Verity for Amazon MGM Studios. It stars Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett, and Dakota Johnson. Verity is another popular novel with an excellent cast. The cast may be enough to make you want to dive into this thriller. Amazon Studios will release Verity in May 2026.
