During the holiday season, you need a feel-good film that hits you in the heartstrings. Craig Brewer’s latest film, Song Sung Blue, fills that need with a beautifully music-driven biopic that shows audiences it’s never too late to have big dreams.
Rather than being a regular biopic on legendary artist Neil Diamond, Song Sung Blue focuses on the power of his music that helped form the tribute band Lightning and Thunder. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson play the musically talented couple, Mike and Claire Sardina, who started this duo act.
The film showcases the trials and tribulations of their relationship, displaying their love for one another through Neil Diamond’s music. It is a true love story of these two divorcees and single parents who found each other, hitting some of the highs and lows through Diamond’s musical library.

Song Sung Blue begins their story with their first meeting backstage, performing as celebrity impersonators at state fairs and dive bars. Both of them have dreams of making it big on their own and living off their passion for music while supporting their families financially.
It’s their chance encounter that leads them to start their own tribute band to one of the greatest artists of all time, without knowing how huge they’ll become in their hometown of Milwaukee.
There are some significant moments through their lives that play out in the film, testing their relationship as they navigate this emotional rollercoaster. Their bond also affects their families as they come together to support both Mike and Claire’s dreams of making it big with their tribute band.
The musical couple grows with their band and collaborators in a film that shows that, despite the darkness that comes in our lives, there is always light to show us the way.
It has been quite some time since seeing Kate Hudson on the big screen with her big array of rom-coms. She plays a more mature role this time around, but she’s still incredible and brings a little humor like her previous work.
Even in playing a middle-aged single mother of two who loves songs by Patsy Cline, Hudson still offers her sweet charm and smile through the tragedy that falls upon her character.
Complimenting her performance is Hugh Jackman as Lightning himself, Mike. He does carry a rockstar persona through much of the first act of the film, but once the audience gets to know the struggles he has faced, whether it’s his PTSD from Vietnam or his heart condition, everyone will see how much he wants to fulfill his dreams of being a famous musician.
Both Hudson and Jackman play off each other so well. Both of their characters share many similarities, but it’s their love of music that brings them together. Brewer does a great job in showing just how vulnerable Mike and Claire are as they are both former addicts trying to be better each day, but it’s their loving relationship that keeps both of them alive and chasing their almost impossible dreams.

Even though they couldn’t hit the same amount of success as Neil Diamond, it’s the little victories along the way that make anyone cheer for this tribute band to do well. The documentary that the film is based on does showcase that with real footage and interviews from Claire and some of the bandmates, so the film has to find a way to emulate that with a narrative.
For much of the film, it delivers on the emotions and includes powerful performances from both Hudson and Jackman.
The rest of the cast also follows through with some tender moments that stay with the audience. King Princess and Ella Anderson have a great stepsister bond that just shows how well blended families can stick together at their lowest.
Jim Belushi makes a return to the big screen with his wholeheartedness and humor as a blue-collar worker, helping to make both Mike and Claire’s dreams of stardom come true as their manager. Mustafa Shakir gives it his all with his rockstar performance as the James Brown impersonator known as the Sex Machine.
The music is also considered a huge part of the film, especially with the usage of Neil Diamond’s music catalog. Each of his songs also sums up Mike and Claire’s relationship pretty nicely. Even the movie’s title is named after one of his songs, and it’s one of the most enduring ones, which shows that some of the sad moments can also uplift us.
Song Sung Blue brings a heartfelt love story that is well-crafted, thanks to the performances of our leads and a great soundtrack. The film will leave the audience with music, heartbreak, and emotions, all hitting at the same time.
It is a movie that is just as sentimental as the music that it is inspired by.
