For more than a decade, Tori Kelly has occupied a unique space in popular music.

She’s never fit neatly into a single category. Pop audiences embrace her songwriting. R&B fans admire her vocal precision. Gospel listeners connect with her faith. Yet despite possessing one of the strongest voices of her generation, Kelly often feels overlooked in conversations about today’s elite vocalists.

God Must Really Love Me serves as a reminder of exactly why she deserves to be part of those discussions.

The album arrives during a transformative chapter in Kelly’s life. Inspired by motherhood, marriage, faith, and personal growth, the project finds her reflecting on gratitude without losing sight of the challenges that make gratitude meaningful.

Rather than delivering a traditional Christian album, Kelly blends spiritual themes with contemporary pop and R&B production, creating a record that feels accessible regardless of a listener’s faith background. The album explores motherhood, faith, identity, and protecting one’s peace while drawing heavily from her experiences as a new parent.

What immediately stands out is how comfortable Kelly sounds throughout the project. There is no sense that she’s chasing social media virality or trying to fit into a particular lane. Instead, she leans fully into the artist that she has fought so hard to become.

Vocally, she remains in a class of her own.

Kelly’s signature runs, layered harmonies, and intricate vocal arrangements are present throughout the album, often recalling the smooth precision and creativity of Brandy’s vocal styling. Few contemporary singers are capable of blending technical excellence with emotional sincerity this effectively.

Her voice also pairs beautifully with the gospel influences woven throughout the record. Songs like “Without You” make excellent use of choir arrangements that elevate the material without overwhelming it.

The album’s strongest moments arrive when Kelly allows vulnerability to coexist with confidence.

“Control” is one of the project’s standout tracks, transforming everyday anxieties into a powerful reflection on surrendering burdens beyond our control. “Too Much” offers one of the album’s most personal moments, exploring the fears and overwhelming emotions that accompany new motherhood.

Meanwhile, “Hurts So Good” delivers one of the most surprising songs on the record. Built around a playful rhythm and rich melodies, it recalls classic R&B storytelling in a way that feels reminiscent of Alicia Keys’ “A Woman’s Worth” while still sounding distinctly like Tori Kelly.

These songs have emerged as consensus highlights among early reviews, and it’s easy to understand why.

Interestingly, God Must Really Love Me becomes stronger as it progresses.

While the opening stretch establishes the album’s themes, the latter half carries greater emotional weight and musical variety. Tracks like “Bird,” “Smooth Landing,” and “Too Much” reveal some of Kelly’s sharpest songwriting, balancing deeply personal experiences with universal emotions.

Several songs were even inspired by moments from pregnancy and early motherhood, including ideas developed while touring Europe and caring for her newborn son.

If there is a criticism to be made, it is that the album occasionally settles into a similar emotional and sonic space for extended stretches, most noticeable at the beginning of the album. The themes of gratitude, faith, reassurance, and contentment are meaningful, but some songs blur together during the journey from the intro to about midway of the record.

A little more stylistic experimentation could have elevated the project even further. Still, those minor shortcomings do little to diminish the album’s overall impact.

More than anything, God Must Really Love Me feels authentic. It’s the sound of an artist embracing every part of who she is rather than compartmentalizing those identities. Kelly doesn’t separate motherhood from artistry, faith from songwriting, or vulnerability from strength. Instead, she allows all of those elements to exist together.

The result is what may be her most grounded and personal album to date.

With a European tour beginning this November in Madrid and continuing across the continent through December, Kelly now has an opportunity to bring these songs to audiences in a live setting where her vocal gifts have always shined brightest.

God Must Really Love Me may not be the flashiest release of Tori Kelly’s career, but it is among her most genuine. In a musical landscape often dominated by noise and spectacle, there’s something refreshing about an artist finding power in gratitude, faith, and simple truths.
