On Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Season 1 Episode 9, “Erroneous,” an attack brings Rudy and Geri back to Paula’s aid as they get closer to figuring out what they’re up against.
After feeling relatively stagnant for most of the season, “Erroneous” activates Rudy in a thrilling manner. The attack in his home was a shocking moment for the character that pulls him right into the fray and off the sidelines. His personal stakes have increased tenfold.
The moment confronts Rudy directly with the very danger he’s worked very hard to try and avoid. Though his skittishness doesn’t entirely dissipate, the attack is transformative for the character. He’s faced his biggest fear and come out on the other side alive.

Charlie Hall eagerly sinks his teeth into this material. Rather than flip Rudy’s disposition like a switch, he presents an active fight to swallow his fear and be braver. He understands that bravery is an act and plays with the effort to act to dynamic and humorous results.
Up until this point, Rudy’s reluctance to take risks largely defined him. Hall relishes in the moment to actively decide against continuing to play it safe considering it didn’t ultimately protect him. The pool interrogation creates not only a brilliant moment of comedy but a triumphant victory for a character that’s remained confined to a box a majority of the season.
It’s admittedly a relief that Rudy and Geri are back with Paula. It’s taken a bit to get there, but the trio is magic when they’re together and hopefully the show continues to capitalize on their impeccable chemistry.

It also allows the show to externalize Paula’s struggle a bit more. Despite the incredible, ironic moments Tatiana Maslany’s internal performance generates, it frees Paula from her head a bit and livens the momentum.
The other major success of “Erroneous” is the way it builds out the world of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. Paula investigates each of Trevor’s former clients and constructs an intricate web to figure out exactly how this secret organization operates.
It’s intricate and goes deep without becoming overwhelming. Paula confronts a wide diaspora of people, allowing the show to tangibly demonstrate how wide this organization’s reach is. Its presentation, though quick, doesn’t gloss over the magnitude either.

It could have been very easy to fall into over reliance on ambiguity with this organization. While Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed revels in the shadows, “Erroneous” proves it merely utilizes those shadows as a tool, not a distraction from lack of substance.
“Erroneous” injects a real sense of scale into the series. This organization has its hands in every corner imaginable and stretches to incredibly powerful people. It creates an effective distrust with the audience going forward; who can we trust really, besides Paula and maybe Rudy and Geri?
As the penultimate episode in the season, “Erroneous” solidly sets us up for a chaotic finale without feeling like they’re dragging their feet. There are still myriad balls in the air that leave you guessing as to how it will all conclude. However, we’ve made satisfying headway toward resolution.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed streams Wednesday on AppleTV.
