There’s a clear idea behind KONNAKOL.

At least, there is supposed to be.

The album arrives with the promise of something more rooted. More personal. A project that pulls from South Asian musical traditions, built around konnakol vocal percussion and tied to Zayn Malik’s heritage in a way his previous work has only hinted at.

It’s a theoretically compelling direction, especially for an artist who has spent much of his solo career circling themes of love, loss, and self-reflection within a familiar pop-R&B space.

But KONNAKOL doesn’t fully follow through on that promise.

Instead, it opens slowly.

The early stretch of the album feels subdued to the point of blending together. The production is polished, but the energy remains low, and the songs don’t immediately distinguish themselves from one another.

There’s a noticeable lack of momentum in those first few tracks, as if the album is still trying to find its footing in unfamiliar territory.

It begins to shift around track four.

“Sideways” marks a turning point. The tempo lifts slightly, the structure feels tighter, and the melody sticks in a way that earlier songs don’t quite manage. From there, the album settles into a more consistent groove, leaning into the kind of pop and R&B sound that has defined much of ZAYN’s solo work.

And that’s where the album feels most comfortable.

Vocally, he remains the strongest element throughout. His voice carries the weight of the project, moving easily between restrained verses and more emotive, layered choruses. There’s a familiarity to it, but also a reliability.

Even when the songwriting themes feel repetitive, the vocal delivery gives the material a sense of cohesion.
That consistency, though, is part of the issue.

A lot of the album stays within a narrow emotional and lyrical range. The themes repeat. The imagery overlaps. There’s a recurring sense of distance, of longing, of self-awareness framed as warning.

It’s effective in small doses, but stretched across an entire project, it starts to feel cyclical and slightly self-depricating.
The concept behind the album occasionally breaks through.

There are moments where the influence of its stated inspiration becomes more visible, where the production shifts just enough to suggest something outside of the usual structure. But those moments are brief. They feel like glimpses of what the album could have been rather than a fully realized direction.

When it works, it’s noticeable. When it fades, the album returns to safer ground.

That push and pull defines most of the listening experience.

The back half of the album benefits from a steadier flow. The pacing evens out, and the songs feel more intentional in how they build on one another. It becomes easier to settle into the sound, even if it doesn’t necessarily surprise you.

KONNAKOL is not a bad album, it’s just not as distinct as it promised to be.

Somewhere there’s a version of this project that leans fully into its concept, that explores identity and heritage with the same focus it gives to its production and vocal performance. That version feels just out of reach here.

Instead, what remains is something more familiar.

A collection of well-produced, vocally strong tracks that fit comfortably within ZAYN’s existing catalog. It sounds like him. It moves like him. It just doesn’t push far enough beyond that.

Still, there’s enough here to hold onto.

KONNAKOL feels like a step for Zayn, just not a major leap.
