It’s getting hot, hot, hot, and not just because of the summer sun. Hadestown: The Musical is bringing the heat as a filmed adaptation is heading to theaters.
Created by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, Hadestown: The Musical has become one of the most celebrated musicals of the past decade, earning critical acclaim on Broadway and stages around the world. What began as a concept album eventually evolved into an award-winning theatrical phenomenon, and now the beloved production is making its biggest leap yet to the big screen.
For those unfamiliar with its stage success, the Broadway production won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Direction of a Musical, cementing its place as a modern Broadway classic.

The show offers a fresh, emotionally resonant retelling of the Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice, alongside Hades and Persephone, and explores themes of love, hope, sacrifice, and the struggle between power and humanity.
Here’s everything you need to know about the film, from the cast and plot to trailers and where to watch.
Release Date and Where to Watch
Hadestown: The Musical premieres nationwide for a five-day theatrical release starting on July 24th. The film was first screened at the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival. It will premiere in the United Kingdom in October 2026.
Story and Setting

Narrated by the messenger of the gods Hermes, Hadestown: The Musical intertwines the stories of two couples from Greek mythology: the young lovers Orpheus and Eurydice, and the troubled marriage of Hades and Persephone.
The musical follows Orpheus, a songwriter who is in love with Eurydice. Eurydice is tested when her hardships lead her to make a life-changing decision. Meanwhile, Hades, ruler of the underworld, keeps his kingdom running through relentless labor, while his wife, Persephone, grows increasingly unhappy with spending half the year below ground.
As tensions between Hades and Persephone deepen, Eurydice is drawn to the promises of Hadestown, forcing Orpheus to travel down below to rescue the woman he loves.
The filmed version is a live capture during three live performances between February 28 and March 1, 2025, in London’s West End.

Rather than feeling like it’s made only for the die-hard theater fans who know every lyric, the adaptation is meant to appeal to a broader audience, including moviegoers who may have never seen the stage production or had the chance to get tickets to Broadway.
Whether you’re familiar with the musical or experiencing the story for the first time, its haunting score, striking visuals, and emotionally rich retelling of ancient myths create a cinematic experience that makes for great entertainment.
